Cybersecurity Competitions
Yavapai College students compete in real-world cybersecurity challenges that simulate live cyber incidents and build industry-ready skills.
Apply Skills Beyond the Classroom
Cybersecurity at Yavapai College extends beyond the classroom. Students regularly compete in regional and national cybersecurity competitions, applying their skills in high-pressure, real-world scenarios.
These events simulate live cyber incidents, requiring participants to analyze threats, defend systems, and uncover vulnerabilities—often against top university teams.
Participation builds technical ability, confidence, and teamwork—skills directly aligned with today’s cybersecurity workforce.
How Cyber Competitions Work
Cybersecurity competitions are typically structured as Capture-the-Flag (CTF) events, where participants solve challenges to uncover hidden “flags” within systems.
Common formats include:
- Challenge-based (Jeopardy style): Timed problem solving across multiple domains
- Red vs. Blue Team: Defend systems while responding to live attacks
- Offense vs. Offense: Identify and exploit vulnerabilities in competing systems
These competitions mirror real-world cybersecurity roles and align with frameworks such as the NICE Workforce Framework, MITRE ATT&CK, and the Center for Internet Security Controls.
Why It Matters
Students who participate in cybersecurity competitions gain:
- Hands-on experience with industry tools
- Real incident response and threat analysis skills
- Team collaboration under pressure
- Resume-building experience valued by employers
Many organizations actively recruit from cybersecurity competitions, recognizing the practical skills competitors bring.
Get Involved
Cyber competitions at Yavapai College are open to students at all experience levels.
You can start by:

TracerFire Sandia National Laboratories
Yavapai College students compete in the TracerFire Capture-the-Flag (CTF) competition hosted by Sandia National Laboratories, a leader in national defense and cybersecurity research.
In this incident-response focused event, students analyze simulated cyberattacks using industry tools such as:
- Autopsy (digital forensics)
- Arkime (network traffic analysis)
- Kibana (log analysis)
During TracerFire 11, YC students investigated a fictional attack on a water utility system, reconstructing events and identifying vulnerabilities.
- Placement: 16th out of 31 teams
- Competitors included: ASU, UNLV, ERAU
- Team experience: First-year students competing alongside advanced programs
